5th Annual MusicFest and a Grant!

Friends of Watertown Music is pleased to announce the receipt of a
$10,000 Instrument Grant
from the Music Drives Us Foundation

Included in the grant: hand drums for elementary general music classes and a p-bone trombone, two bass clarinets, and a baritone saxophone for the middle and high schools, plus two portable electronic pianos for the elementary and high schools. The instruments have arrived and are already in classrooms! The “bari sax” and bass clarinets are expensive and often difficult for students to rent, and the schools have been without playable models for interested students. Now we – band members and audience alike – will hear a fuller, more complete ensemble sound as students play these new instruments!

We will be hosting an upcoming celebration of the grant where students will be able to play their instruments and discuss music with Ernie Boch, Jr., Berklee graduate and founder of Music Drives Us.

We would like to thank Music Drives Us for its generous award of instruments that will be used throughout the schools to enhance the general music and instrument programs in the Watertown Public Schools!

And…
We hope to see you at our 5th Annual Watertown MusicFest on April 8, 2016!

News and Happenings

Friends of Watertown Music announces its
3rd grant to the Watertown Public Schools!

We are pleased to present a grant of $5830 for a 0.1 FTE increase in music teaching.  This grant allows the Cunniff School to offer adaptive music at the elementary level providing a more accessible experience and connection to music for all students.

The district has already increased elementary instrument instruction in addition to restoring the Fine, Applied, and Performing Arts (FAPA) curriculum coordinator position.  The department now has an additional 1.2 Full-Time Equivalent positions for the 2015-16 school year.

We welcome Magen Slesinger as the new FAPA coordinator!

All Friends of Watertown Music grants are matched at least 2.5:1 by district funding.  The grants provide seed money for positions that are then incorporated into the school budget.  Over the past four academic years, we have been able to provide over $18,000 in grants for teaching positions through the generosity of our supporters.

Thank you to all our donors!!

We also thank the Watertown Community Foundation for their grant of $2250 for instrument purchase.  The program now has new cymbals, viola, violin, and elementary sized bass for students to play!

Friends of Watertown Music is still accepting instrument donations.  Please contact us at HelloWatertownMusic@gmail.com if you have an instruments you would like to donate.  Friends of Watertown Music is a 501(c)(3) organization; all donations are tax-deductible.

Our Annual Watertown MusicFests have been great community events with over 50 performances each year – by Watertown’s youngest musicians to professionals – on 4 “stages”, allowing Friends of Watertown Music to make more than $12,000 in grants for the direct benefit of music programming in the Watertown Public Schools.

The Schools are matching our most recent grant in a 2.5 to 1 ratio, creating a 0.4 FTE position at the Hosmer School that includes pre-school and pre-kindergarten music classes in addition to ensuring that elementary students across the district receive music education classes with an appropriate student : teacher ratio. The Middle School Jazz Band, originally funded by a 2012-13 Friends of Watertown Music grant, is now incorporated into the school budget.

Help make 2015 our best year ever!

2014-15 Grant!
Friends of Watertown Music is pleased to announce a $5,863 grant to the Watertown Public Schools to ensure that all elementary students receive music education classes with an appropriate student:teacher ratio. This support will help reduce the burden on overextended music teachers throughout the system.

The Schools are matching our funds in a 2.5 to 1 ratio, creating a 0.4 FTE position at the Hosmer School that also includes pre-school and pre-kindergarten music classes.

The Middle School Jazz Band, originally funded by a 2012-13 Friends of Watertown Music grant of $6,800, is now incorporated into the school budget. One of our key goals has been to fund initiatives that are then sustained in the general school budget. We continue to work with the School Administration to respond to needs identified by the music teachers and create opportunities for the students! We have every expectation that this year’s grant will also function as seed money and allow the cost of the new position to become a permanent part of the music program.

We would like to thank all of our supporters for their generous gifts of time and money toward our educational mission, and we invite as many as possible to join us at the Wednesday, November 5, 2014 School Committee meeting (Town Hall, 7 pm) for the presentation of our grant.

We look forward to your continued engagement in music in Watertown Public Schools, and we’ll see you on March 6th for the 4th Annual Watertown Music Fest!

Friends of Watertown Music, Inc., incorporated in 2014, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All donations are fully tax deductible within the limits of the law.
